What a PDF Watermark Does and Does Not Protect
A watermark is not a security control. It is a marker: it puts the document's status, its recipient, or a warning about its use directly in the reader's eye. That is exactly where its value comes from.
What a watermark does
A watermark places semi-transparent text or an image over the page. It does not alter, hide or lock the content. All it does is add context to every page.
That modest function turns out to matter, because most document accidents come not from malice but from confusion: the wrong version gets signed, a draft reaches the client, an internal note leaves the building.
The four most useful cases

That last row matters most. Send the same document to ten people, each copy watermarked with that person's name, and if it leaks you know which copy left. This is called a tracking watermark, and its deterrent effect comes not from technical protection but from making responsibility personal.
Can a watermark be removed?
Yes. A watermark is a separate graphic object inside the PDF; finding and deleting it is not technically hard. It can also be painted out by converting the page to an image.
So treating a watermark as protection against a determined attacker is a mistake. A watermark works against someone who would use the document accidentally in the wrong place, not against someone trying to steal it. Those are entirely different threats, and in daily life the second one is far more common.
Placement: visibility against readability
A badly placed watermark makes a document unreadable, and people start ignoring it. A good one does three things at once: it is noticeable at a glance, it does not obstruct close reading, and it cannot be removed by simply cropping.
- Angle: 45 degrees diagonal is the most common and most legible option.
- Opacity: 10–20%. Darker suppresses the text; lighter goes unnoticed.
- Position: Centre of the page. A corner watermark is trivially cropped away.
- Size: Around half the page width. A small watermark vanishes in a screenshot.
- Colour: Stay in greys; coloured watermarks print unpredictably.
Order of operations
Apply the watermark to the final document: after merging and compressing, before signing. Otherwise a merged document ends up with some pages watermarked and some not — which looks worse than no watermark at all.
Adding a watermark to a signed document invalidates the signature. If a watermark is required, apply it to the unsigned copy, or produce the watermarked version as a separate distribution copy.
